Scout Survival Camp - September 2012

Mellow
Farm, Dockenfield was the location for the Scout Survival Camp on 28th
– 30th September. Nine Scouts
braved the elements in order to hone their survival skills. Meeting on Friday evening, the first night was
spent in tents.
As
the mist settled on the Saturday morning, survival training commenced in
earnest with a bit of navigation, followed by how to build a shelter. Through the afternoon, first aid was looked
at, along with how to really light a fire (Hamish style).
The evening meal on Saturday was cooked by
the scouts, who then had to go up the hill (a really, really steep one) in
order to make their shelters / put up their hammocks to sleep in.
Once the sleeping arrangements were in place, a fire was lit followed by much burning of marshmallows. The weekend was not without its injuries, chief of which was Andy's burned finger, caused by said marshmallows.
After a cold Saturday night, Sunday morning
was spent going through camp hygiene and how to forage for food. The Scouts then had to cook a
chicken on a spit over the fire. Early
afternoon saw the camp close down, and parents turn up to collect tired
scouts. All scouts present successfully
achieved their survival badge.
